A DIY Wreath box, a Birthday, a Missing Parcel and a Rather Lovely Connection

Sometimes, the loveliest part of running a small business isn't what you sell, but the people you meet along the way.

At Blooms and Evergreen, we believe there's something rather special about giving someone the opportunity to get creative. Whether it's a workshop shared with friends or a quiet afternoon spent making something beautiful, a little creativity can bring a lot of joy.

But every now and then, an order comes along that reminds us that what we do is about so much more than flowers and foliage.

This is a little story about a birthday, a luxury wreath-making box, a missing parcel and a rather wonderful lady called Debbie.

A Birthday Gift With a Difference

It all began when Debbie got in touch to order one of our Luxury DIY Wreath-Making Boxes for her son's birthday. Her son spends his working days looking after others, but beneath that professional exterior, there's a budding florist just waiting for an opportunity to flourish.

And what better birthday present than a little creative escape?

Our luxury wreath-making boxes contain everything needed to create a beautiful, individual wreath at home, with a selection of fresh seasonal foliage, flowers and decorative elements to inspire a little botanical magic.

The plan was simple. We'd arrange for the box to arrive on his birthday, giving him another reason to smile on his special day.

Lovely, right? Well, that was the plan...

The Curious Case of the Missing Birthday Parcel

Now, anyone who runs a small business knows that handing a precious parcel over to a courier can sometimes feel like an exercise in blind faith. You carefully pack everything, wave it goodbye, cross your fingers and hope for the best.

The following morning, I checked my emails and there it was. A message from Debbie. Oh no.

You know that sinking feeling when you just KNOW something hasn't gone quite to plan? The birthday box was nowhere to be found. Yet, according to the courier's tracking information, it had been delivered. Of course it had.

What followed was a flurry of emails, a little detective work and a fair bit of head-scratching as we tried to work out where on earth this precious birthday parcel had ended up. And all of this was happening between two people on opposite sides of the world. Debbie was in South Africa, and I was here in London.

Not quite the seamless birthday surprise we'd imagined!

From Customer Emails to a Rather Lovely Friendship

But here's where the story takes a lovely turn.

Somewhere between the missing parcel, the back-and-forth emails and our shared determination to get things sorted. What could easily have been a frustrating customer experience turned into one of the most pleasant interactions I've had since starting Blooms and Evergreen. Debbie was an absolute delight.

By the end of our exchanges, I genuinely felt as though I'd made a friend on the other side of the world.

And it reminded me of something I think we sometimes forget in the hustle and bustle of running a business: behind every order, every email and every delivery address is a real person, with their own stories, celebrations and reasons for choosing something special.

Those little human connections make being a small business owner so rewarding.

And Now, for the Birthday Boy's Masterpiece...

Well, just look at that BLOODY FABULOUS WREATH! Seriously.

The composition, the textures, the beautiful balance of flowers and foliage. What an absolutely wonderful creation. Clearly, the florist within him was just waiting for an opportunity to flourish!

One of the things we love most about our wreath-making boxes is that no two finished wreaths are ever quite the same. We provide the materials, a little guidance and plenty of creative possibility, but the finished piece is entirely down to the person making it. Everyone brings their own personality, style and imagination to the process. And this particular birthday creation is a perfect example of that. We think he might just have a second career waiting in the wings!

It's the Little Things That Make a Big Difference

When I started Blooms and Evergreen, I wanted to create experiences that encourage people to slow down, reconnect with their creativity and enjoy the simple pleasure of making something with their hands.

Of course, beautiful flowers and foliage are a huge part of that. But stories like Debbie's remind me that the real magic often happens beyond the flowers themselves. It's in the thoughtfulness of a mother choosing a gift that celebrates her son's interests. It's in the joy of discovering a creative talent. It's in the kindness of a stranger who, after a handful of emails, no longer feels like a stranger at all. And sometimes, it's even in a courier mishap that unexpectedly brings two people together.

So, Debbie, thank you for being such an absolute delight. It was a genuine pleasure getting to know you, even if our introduction involved a little parcel-related chaos.

And to your wonderfully talented son, happy belated birthday. We hope your wreath brought you as much joy to create as it brought us to see the finished result.

From London to South Africa, with love, flowers and a little courier-induced chaos. 💚
